Rolex GMT Master II Watches

Bigger and thicker than the GMT Master, the GMT Master II marked the introduction of sapphire crystals and white gold marker surrounds for Rolex in 1983. The more recent GMT Master II 11670 LN saw the release of the upgraded Oyster case that now features on the Submariner 116610 LN.

Rolex GMT Master II Watches

The story of the Rolex GMT-Master II began in the 1950s when Rolex and Pan Am collaborated to craft a watch for the airline’s commercial pilots. Debuting in 1955, the original GMT-Master introduced an additional hour hand that tracked a 24-hour rotating bezel, providing the means for pilots to track multiple time zones. As well as aviation professionals, it’s the perfect choice for frequent travellers visiting different countries, or even non-travellers who want to monitor the time in a different part of the world at a mere glance.

As useful today as it’s ever been, a GMT function is now a relatively widespread complication in mechanical watchmaking, with many brands including at least one in their line-up.

In 1983, the first GMT-Master II, reference 16760, was launched, boasting a useful upgrade, namely an independently adjustable hour hand. This innovative feature enabled the adjustment of local time without impacting the reference time—a revolutionary concept for frequent travellers and professionals.

There were also some minor aesthetic introductions. The new-generation model now came with a sapphire crystal instead of acrylic and the hour markers were edged with white gold for a more luxurious feel. A new movement required a thicker case size, leading to its nickname “The Fat Lady”.

Interestingly, the GMT-Master II didn’t immediately replace the GMT-Master. The latter was actually in production until the very end of the millennium, so both Rolex’s GMT models were being manufactured simultaneously for almost two decades.

In 2005, a significant enhancement was made with the introduction of the Cerachrom bezel. Unlike the previous aluminium bezel, Cerachrom is virtually resistant to scratches and fading, enhancing both the aesthetics and longevity of the Rolex GMT-Master II.

As the world has evolved, the GMT-Master II has expertly adapted by incorporating technological advancements and innovative materials. Today's Rolex GMT-Master II features a sturdy, reliable, self-winding movement, a waterproof Oyster case, and a comfortable, stylish bracelet where micro-adjustments can be made for the perfect fit. The GMT-Master II comes with both Jubilee and Oyster bracelet options.

The aesthetic variations across the Rolex GMT-Master II family add to its allure. From the classic stainless steel to the luxurious gold and two-tone options, there's a model to match every individual style. The red and blue “Pepsi” bezel option is still considered the archetypal GMT bezel, but the black-and-blue variation is also hugely popular. On a Jubilee bracelet this has been nicknamed the “Batgirl”, whereas the “Batman” is paired with a classic three-link Oyster bracelet. There are also bi-metal versions nicknamed the “Root beer” and even a left-hand version where the crown and signature Cyclops lens are on the opposite side of the watch. This is known as the “Sprite” due to its vibrant green and black bezel.

The Rolex GMT-Master II boasts robust materials and advanced technology. Its case is crafted from corrosion-resistant 906L Oystersteel, ensuring longevity and resilience. The Cerachrom bezel insert, made from a high-tech ceramic material, is virtually resistant to scratches and fading from UV rays.

All current Rolex GMT-Master II’s are powered by Rolex's in-house Caliber 3285 movement, a Superlative Chronometer that has undergone vigorous testing for precision and accuracy by both COSC and Rolex itself. This self-winding mechanical movement is not only highly accurate but is also equipped with a Parachrom hairspring offering superior resistance to shocks and temperature variations.

The diverse range of pre-owned Rolex GMT-Master II watches at Watchfinder covers all tastes and preferences, whether you’re looking for a basic stainless steel model or a gold version with an unusual dial or jewelled bezel.

Discover your ideal Rolex GMT-Master II today and add one of the industry’s most iconic timepieces to your collection.
