Tudor Ranger Watches

The Tudor Ranger first appeared in the 1960s, taking inspiration from the Tudor Oyster Prince—a robust timepiece used by members of the British North Greenland Expedition in the 1950s. The Ranger is considered to be Tudor’s answer to Rolex’s iconic Explorer model.

Tudor Ranger Watches

The Tudor Ranger epitomises the brand's dedication to precision, durability, and aesthetic appeal. Tudor, a leading name in the industry and the sister brand of Rolex, has a long-standing tradition of creating enduring timepieces, with the Tudor Ranger a prime example.

The Ranger name first appeared in 1943 via the reference 279, a watch made specifically for the Indian market—although, this was not the first Ranger watch. The Ranger name was simply added to the dial to give it a more adventurous feel.

The first official Ranger model, then, was introduced in the 1960s. This watch took inspiration from the Tudor Oyster Prince, reference 7808, which was used by members of the British North Greenland Expedition from 1952 to 1954. The Oyster Prince was a hardy, practical and affordable instrument—qualities the current Ranger collection continues to uphold.

It was via this first Ranger model from the 60s—the Oyster Prince Ranger, reference 7995—that Tudor established the collection’s classic look. This includes a black dial with luminescent Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, as well as an arrow hour hand. A few rare models even had a date window at 3 o’clock. The case size for these earlier models was 34mm.

Tudor produced the Ranger until the late 1980s when it was discontinued before being reintroduced as the Heritage Ranger—reference 79910—a much larger 41mm watch, in 2014.

The latest Ranger collection is the reference M79950—introduced in 2022—which boasts the same design codes as the original model, albeit with a case size slightly reduced to 39mm. It comes fitted with a high-performance manufacture calibre and “T-fit” clasp on the bracelet. It’s also available on fabric or hybrid rubber and leather straps.

The Tudor Ranger's historical background is steeped in the demands of professional explorers and adventurers. The Ranger, designed to weather the most extreme conditions, has evolved over the decades to meet the requirements of contemporary watch enthusiasts while staying true to its roots.

The distinguishing characteristics of the Tudor Ranger watch include its sturdy construction. Made with precision and an eye for detail, this watch is designed to last. The robust stainless-steel case offers outstanding durability, while the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal guarantees a clear view of the dial. You’ll be pleased to know that the Tudor Ranger is prepared for any water-based adventures, too, with a water resistance of up to 100 metres.

At the heart of the current Tudor Ranger collection is the Manufacture Calibre MT5402, which is COSC-certified, meaning it’s been tested for precision and accuracy by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute. This movement, developed in-house by Tudor, offers exceptional accuracy and reliability. Its robust construction ensures longevity with a 70-hour power reserve, making it a reliable companion for any adventure.

If you’re looking for a Tudor watch but fancy something other than the popular Black Bay model, why not explore a range of pre-owned Tudor Ranger watches online today with Watchfinder.
